A SERVICE of remembrance was held at Tavistock War Memorial on Monday to mark the centenary of the day Great Britain entered the Great War. Around 50 people of all ages gathered to pay their respects to the brave men and women who lost their lives in the First World War, including former service personnel, and Tavistock town mayor Cllr Harry Smith. The Tavistock branch of the Royal British Legion held the short service to remember, in particular, the brave souls from the Tavistock area whose names are listed on the war memorial, and who in the following four years made the ultimate sacrifice. Malcolm Christie, chairman of the Tavistock Royal British Legion and standard bearer, said how pleased he was with the high attendance at the service: 'I was really pleased with how well the service went, and it was so good to see so many people there.' l Pictured above are Sue Tucker, lay reader from St Eustachius' Church, Pat Wood, standard bearer for the Royal Marines Association, Malcolm Christie, standard bearer and chairman, Tavistock Royal British Legion and Tony Ellery, standard bearer, Lamerton Royal British Legion.
