TWO volunteers have won this year's West Devon Mayoral Awards for their selfless work. Fourteen-year-old Hatherleigh student William Kivell and Okehampton Chamber of Trade member Donald Rooke have both shown extraordinary commitment to their communities, said the judges. William, who was nominated by Hatherleigh Town Council, is a keen volunteer for St John Ambulance and an active member of the Hatherleigh Players. In his role with St John he has given more than 200 hours this year to voluntary work. The youngster has helped out at many events, including Ten Tors and the regular matches at Okehampton Rugby Club. William also takes charge in setting up and running the lights for the Hatherleigh Players and uses his lighting skills for performances at the Octagon Theatre in Okehampton. His nomination from the town council said: 'During last year's Ten Tors, he was at the Army Camp in dreadful conditions for the entire weekend, assisting with the recovery and support of young people who were cold and in need of a blanket and a smile. He is going to do the same again this year.' West Devon mayor Dennis Bater, who led the judges, said: 'William was a unanimous choice for the Under 18s award. He is a rare young man in this very modern day of conformity. 'He does not just give to his own home community but the wider community beyond.' Mr Rooke, an active member of Okehampton Chamber of Trade, organises the town's summer flower baskets, the Christmas trees and lights and the colourful banners on the lamp posts in the centre of the town. He won the Over 18s award. Okehampton mayor Tony Leech, who nominated Mr Rooke, said: 'His quiet hands-on role is much appreciated by the traders and the community.' Cllr Bater added: 'Mr Rooke's work makes a real difference to everyone who live, work and visit Okehampton. 'It's good to know that there are people around like Mr Rooke who work quietly behind the scenes, without any fuss, making the town a better place to live.' The awards are held annually to promote the achievements of residents and groups in the borough. The awards will be presented to the winners by Cllr Bater in the next few weeks.
