I FIND the comment in the recent letter from Susan Wallace that to travel to Waitrose in Okehampton 'is only a short drive' from Tavistock laughable as her reason to support objections to a Tesco store in Tavistock, especially when Ms Wallace further comments that Tavistock residents should all 'cut down on carbon footprints'. Tell that to pensioners and those without cars etc.
May I remind Ms Wallace and perhaps other objectors, that continuous university research has provided overwhelming evidence that: a) a major food store close to a town such as Tavistock, would without doubt bring more business to most of the existing retail trade in Tavistock and b) an additional major store would also lead to an increase in property values for all home owners within the catchment areas of Tavistock and c) would cut down the carbon footprints of many residents, because it would allow local residents to enjoy the benefit of nearby shopping, so providing welcome choice for all.
For the interests of Ms Wallace et al, I am both an owner of retail premises within Tavistock and I am also a local resident who would prefer the choice of a Tesco store, rather than to again visit Morrisons to be told, for example, 'Sorry all our fish was sold by lunchtime today' and which comment has at times also been stated regarding some general fruit and vegetables.
The same objections being conveyed to Tescos, were as all would be aware, similar to the same tide of objections that occurred when Safeways applied for their consent, and so if those in the past had listened to the likes of Ms Wallace, then no Morrisons either would have been possible.
Tavistock needs invigorating. We have lost Woolworths and gained close by a myriad of charity shops and now a pound shop which was not, I might add, caused by, or due to, a nearby major supermarket ie, Morrisons. Extra shopping interest in Tavistock, brought about by a nearby major store, might encourage the more creative investment that we need.
Hopefully, with a positive approach, such a creative and fruitful future might develop for Tavistock.
