TOP class international rugby can be seen at Tavistock Rugby Club next week, as a prestigious fixture is played at Sandy Park.
In an amazing coup for the club, the Royal New Zealand Navy team will be playing an exhibition match against Tavistock RFC on Tuesday October 13, following a rendition of the famous New Zealand Haka.
The Royal Navy Rugby Union has international teams competing in the Babcock Commonwealth Cup, which began a series of matches at Plymouth Albion's Brickfields base on Tuesday. The Royal New Zealand Navy is playing the Royal Navy and the Royal Australian Navy during the tournament — but is now including a day at Tavistock in its busy schedule.
A spokesperson for Tavistock RFC said the club was delighted to play host to such a top outfit.
He said: 'An early kick off of 4.30pm is needed to make the most of the light — but also to let as many local school children as possible get to see the match.
'All proceeds are to be shared between Help for Heros and the British Legion. Tavistock RFC has many proud links with the forces, with players and players' families being involved in conflicts old and new.'
From 3pm onwards, local primary school children will be put through their paces by top coaches from 'down under'.
The Tavistock spokesman said: 'The Royal New Zealand Navy are looking forward to sharing their skills with Tavistock's young people but are hoping to put the senior team to the sword.'
Spectators are not being charged for the privilege of seeing this match but are urged to make a contribution on the gate for the two charities.
They are also urged to arrive in good time for the game.
'If you arrive late you will have missed the famous and terrifying Haka that will be performed before the game in the traditional New Zealand style. For many of us here in Devon this will literally be a once in a lifetime opportunity to see this spectacle,' said the spokesman.
