OFFICERS from Devon and Cornwall Police will be marking mobile phones in Bradleys Estate Agents in Okehampton and Tavistock this Saturday, 16 December, from 11am until 3pm. Crime reduction officers, police community support officers and special constables will be security marking mobile phones using ultra-violet pens. Additional crime reduction advice will also be available. The partnership initiative with Bradleys is an extension of the Force's Mark It, Register It, Keep It campaign, which encourages people to mark their personal possessions to reduce theft, the handling of stolen goods and to help police recover items. Force Crime Reduction Adviser, DC Bob Bunney, said: 'Mobile phones are a popular item to steal and sell on the black market. Nationally, incidents involving mobile phones — such as theft and robbery — account for around 10 per cent of all crime and 50 per cent of all street crime. 'By tightening up on mobile phone security we are putting the fear of crime back on the criminal. Owners may also register their phones to a national database, which will render the phone useless if reported stolen.' Debbie Gregory, Bradleys PR manager, said: 'Mobile phones are now a priority item for youngsters and adults alike and many will be bought as Christmas presents. As an added bonus, by bringing it along to a Bradleys office on December 16, the mobile phone can be security marked in a couple of minutes for free which will assist in reducing the risk of theft in the future.'
