KAREN Gold has been appointed as mayor elect of Callington for the second year running.

Members of the town council said Cllr Gold had done a first class job and they would like her to carry on for a second term, just as her predecessor Cllr Rick Lumley had.

Cllr Gold told fellow councillors she had really enjoyed her first year but it had gone very quickly: 'Just as you get into your stride the year is up so doing a second year will be a lot better — thank you for your support.'

She praised the help of town clerk Vernon Anderson who left last week to take up a post in Frome in Somerset.

'He has been absolutely brilliant and his support for this town has been wonderful,' she said. 'The development of the town hall and the Saltash Road Recreation Park would not have happened without him.

'When you get members of the public complaining that he is going, I think that says it all really. His departure is a huge loss to us and Frome is very lucky.'

Mr Anderson spent two years as town clerk of Callington. Interviews are taking place next week for his successor.
