TO ask one question and be given an answer about something different is, of course, in the best tradition of political debate; and one draws one's conclusions accordingly.
The question posed: 'What happened to the principle of charging fairly for services supplied?'
The reply by Cllr Sherrell (Letters, February 12) chose to ignore this totally and, apart from an unsubstantiated assertion that second home owners are subsidised by local residents, became a discourse on rural post offices, pubs and housing, which were not the subject of my earlier letter; ie, if you don't wish to answer the question, then change the subject!
In contrast, your correspondent, Mr G Stowell took up the subject of my letter in a constructive way and on the wider issue of financing council expenditure in a more equitable manner than by the present highly flawed system, ably expressed several important issues.
Reasoned debate about such issues is to be warmly welcomed and, in my opinion, is preferable to engendering antipathy towards second home owners by attempting, irrationally, to lay every conceivable ill at their door, secure in the knowledge that they cannot express their views through the local ballot box.
