A CONTROVERSIAL plan to build a cafe at Kit Hill, near Callington, has been revived.

Caradon District Council has opposed the construction of a cafe at the popular landmark since a temporary building was put up to cater for spectators of the eclipse last year.

Dave Skilling, of Callington, whose new application will come before Caradon District Council on December 7, has argued that the cafe would serve traffic on the A390 between Callington and Gunnislake. Mr Skilling, who works at nearby Kit Hill Castle Farm, asked to be allowed to live in a caravan on the site.

Caradon argued against the previous application on the grounds that the site was in an elevated position within the Tamar Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and next to Kit Hill Country Park. But planning officers said a fresh application of a higher quality would be considered on its own merits.

Councillor Godfrey Smale supported this view. Councillor Tony Knott supported the scheme and considered that the facilities would be an asset to the area.

Cornwall County and North Cornwall District Councils also opposed the earlier application, although neither Calstock Parish Council nor Callington Town Council raised objections.
