OKEHAMPTON fielded a strong , skillful and keyed up side who scored twice in the early stages before Tavistock had a chance to draw breath. After this initial wobble Tavistock?s pack held their own in the scrums and contested well in rucks and mauls.

Trailing at half-time by 17-0 Tavistock had a strong spell in the second half topped off by a fine individual try under the posts by Tom Hancock running half the length of the pitch, outpacing the Okehampton wing to cut inside, wrong footing most of the Okehampton backs.

In a game riddled with handling errors, as the biting wind took its toll, Tavistock?s backs were unable to use some good ball won by the

forwards in set-pieces. Damien Dee picked up his own kick forward into space some 20 metres from Okehampton lines.

Two tries saw Tavistock?s defences found wanting and took the final tally to six to tries to one.

Man of the match: Tom Hancock.

OKEHAMPTON front row props of Scott Simpson and Stuart Bennie plus hooker Tom McGratton dominated the scrums, winning all their own ball and most of Tavistock?s which stifled their big rumbling forwards of possession.

Fly half for Okehampton, Tom Browne, kicked an early penalty and proceeded to kick well, finding good long touches from defence and moving the ball in attack. David Binns, at inside centre, had long runs, feeding onto Neil who was tackled high just short of the line ? the referee awarding a penalty try. Browne converted.

In the second half Tavistock started to string passes together, James and O?Neill bursting through Okehampton?s well organised defence.

This spurred Tavistock on. Milligan, Thompson and Cuthbert started to show their pace, Hall on the wing got close only to be stopped short.

But Okehampton tackled well, especially Jake Chisholm and Binns, supported by James Heard and Browne.

Robert Long tackled hard and ripped the ball from Tavistock on several occasions stopping their attack, allowing Okehampton to counter-attack by moving the ball wide. Full back Rory Honeychurch came into the line and kicked over the Tavistock back. Joshua Noon chased well and twice tackled the defender with the ball, Luke Crocker backing up and taking it on.

Tavistock had a five-metre scrum. Lane picked up, went to the blind side only to find the referee in his way. He awarded a scrum which Okehampton cleared.

The last ten minutes were manic, Tavistock putting on all the pressure. Bancroft drove deep into Okehampton?s defence. Richards was on hand to continue the move and the ball was released to Lane who crashed his way through to score, but this was too little too late.

Man of the match: Robert Long, Okehampton; Lane, Tavistock.

TAVISTOCK put Okehampton under pressure from the start with a charged down clearance kick providing the first points for Elliot Hoyte.

Some first class tackling from Cameron Hogg and Barnaby Frost stopped the home side?s attacks at every turn.

Running from deep inside his own half Jack Haigh linked with Jake Case and Mark Friend to within striking distance of the Okehampton line, and scrum half Rhys Dunford made space for Josh Leeson to crash over for Tavistock?s second try.

The next and Hoyte?s second came after six phases of play from the visitors.

After the turn-around Tavistock continued to dominate and it was not long before Leeson stole the ball at the lineout to score his second of the morning.

Yet another clearly won lineout saw Barnaby Frost dive through the defence and over the line.

All tries were successfully converted, four by Hoyte and the last by Josh Stephens.

This Sunday Tavistock host Devonport for their first encounter this season, but before that the Tavistock junior section are holding a quiz night next Saturday at Sandy Park starting at 8pm.

OKEHAMPTON continued from where they left off last week and produced excellent interplay between backs and forwards.

Matt Johns took advantage of a poor lineout throw to power his way over after good pressure.

Dominating up front with excellent drives through the middle by White, Francis and Courtier produced good ball for Tom Fogerty, Dan Curtis and Jamie Hignett to put together good handling moves leading to tries for Tom Fogerty and Buster Francis.

At the end of the first half Tavistock won a good ball in their own half and Hallam Bolton raced through the defence to score a good try.

In the second half Tavistock had more play but excellent defence by Johns and Curtis produced turnover ball for Okehampton to mount further attacks producing space for Hignett to race in from halfway.

Further driving runs by the forwards allowed Thom White to storm through and add two tries.

Tavistock continued to play to the end and good work between forwards and backs saw Monty Birdfield race in at the corner.

TAVISTOCK travelled to Okehampton with a strong squad of 17 players and were entertained by a competitive side.

Tavistock started strongly and in the first ten minutes played their best passing rugby of the season to take a 15-point lead.

The try-scorers were Henry Salmon (2) and Rhys Davis, but the most impressive aspect of play was the handling of the backs Jonathon Parsons and Fraser Bayliss and the tackling and passing of scrum half Jamie Stephens.

Okehampton pulled themselves back into the game. Despite determined tackling from Theo Evans, Jake Backway and Fiona McCall and some enterprising runs from Felix Davies and Robert Grove, Okehampton drew level and took the lead 20-15 going into the last ten minutes.

The final phase was keenly contested but the powerful running of Tavistock heavyweights Sam Northmore, Jonty Newton and Connor Williams wore down the Okehampton defence and made the space for Rhys Davis and Henry Kisby to clinch the game with two late tries.

This week home to

Devonport Services, 10.30am at the club.

MAX Phillips was deservedly man of the match and scored four of Tavistock?s 11 tries in this enjoyable local derby.

Okehampton took the lead but Tavistock showed determination and teamwork to lead by half-time.

From the restart Okehampton were playing catchup as they equalised only to see Tavistock regain the lead again. The last play saw Okehampton draw level after sustained pressure on the Tavistock line with a share of the spoils.

As well as the four tries from Max Phillips, Jordan Stacey, Aaron Dobie and Charlie Wood scored two each and William Stenhouse went over the line once.

Annabel Longden, Darcy Bourton, James Ware and Robert Bone marshalled the defence superbly against some fast Okehampton runners.

Tavistock will have to build on this game to get a result against Devonport Services this weekend in what promises to be a good game.

THE strength in depth of both squads enabled two games to be played, with the teams sharing the spoils, winning one game each.

Tavistock opened brightly with skipper Nick Jory and Nick Piper showing good running skills before Marcus Hoddinott scored an excellent try on his debut.

Player of the match Zak Brinkhurst was almost unstoppable and registered three tries, and Tom Jackman?s alertness in attack brought him two more touchdowns.

Tavistock took a good lead into the second half which was eroded and ultimately overhauled, despite excellent and tireless defensive work from George Carter and Charlie Carter.

In the second game Tavistock took an early lead and never looked likely to lose it. Brothers Matthew and Daniel Dobie starred, scoring five tries between them. and with Emmeline Hoyte and Angus Hogg always hungry for the ball, Mathew Gibbins and Barney Megicks both having good runs and Alfie Brinkhurst making an encouraging debut, Tavistock ran out deserved winners.
