Dartmoor Radio Club and Walkham Valley Scouts have been working on amateur radio projects since the successful JOTA weekend in 2008.
The 'Jamboree On The Air' runs every October and gives non-licensed scouts a chance to go live on the air supervised by licensed radio amateurs.
Since JOTA last year Dartmoor Radio Club has been working successfully with the Walkham Valley Scouts to enable those interested to get on the air, assemble amateur radio projects and obtain their scouting communication badges. Several of the scouts have already obtained their foundation licence taking the training course and examination at Callington Community College.
The skills the scouts are acquiring at the training sessions, jointly organised by the enthusiastic Scout leaders and members of Dartmoor Radio Club, have resulted in all members of the troupe building a small AM receiver from very basic components.
During Science and Technology Week, several of the scouts attended a field day running at the luxurious Lamerton Village Hall. Under supervision they were able to transmit to several European countries as far east as Asiatic Russia. They also made contact with amateurs on the east coast of the United States of America.
Dartmoor Radio Club is building upon these co-operative activities with the Scouts. Hopefully the interest in Amateur Radio activities could lead to a lifelong interest in this hobby and potential lucrative careers in electronics.
