Tavistock Ladies 1st XI 2 Newquay Ladies 4 THE game opened with the opposition playing some excellent two touch hockey and Tavistock were having to work extremely hard to win possession of the ball. When this happened the ball was switched from players on the right making some good linking play. Lisa Butler and Fiona Dunn played well in defence for Tavistock and with Laura Stapleton covering the central defensive area it was difficult for Newquay to penetrate the D. Zoe Viggers played well in goal and made some cracking saves keeping Tavistock in the game. Susannah Boulle and Sarah Barratt worked well together and Barratt had a good partnership with Becky Lamb who was constantly up and down the pitch. A break for the opposition allowed them to score the first goal of the match but it was not long before Tavistock retaliated and scored an equaliser from a lovely shot from Laura Armstrong. This lifted the team?s spirits and some good hockey was played following the goal. Despite Tavistock having more possession of the ball it was obvious that they were lacking the dominant last strike when trying get the ball past the keeper. This was a shame as the team were working hard to keep possession and be the attacking team but could not find anyone to finish the ball off when it was in the attacking ?D?. The opposition scored not long before half-time taking it to 2-1 at this stage. The second half saw Tavistock with a much higher percentage of possessional play and this was to the team?s credit as they quickly scored their second goal to equalise the scoreline. Barratt scored the goal after a lot of determination from the attacking players. Jo Gaspar battled well and although winning the ball on numerous occasions had some harsh decisions against her. Gaspar was not the only player to fall foul of this with Butler and Honey working hard despite being obstructed many times. Two quick goals from the opposition saw them win the match and in the cold light of day they played better hockey despite Tavistock having more attacking play. l This week Tavistock are at home at Kelly Astro at 10.15am playing Teignmouth.
