LOCAL schools are set to cash in on a competition to recycle as many old Yellow Pages directories as they can. The Yellow Woods Challenge is the environmental competition for schools run by Yellow Pages, working with the Woodland Trust and West Devon Borough Council. Schools that collect the most directories per pupil will win hundreds of pounds in cash prizes. And for every pound awarded to schools, Yellow Pages will give a matching pound to the Woodland Trust, the UK?s leading woodland conservation charity. All participating schools receive free educational materials featuring the campaign mascot, Kirk ? a woodland creature that makes learning about recycling and the environment fun for children. Schoolchildren are also invited to create giant sculptures out of their old directories for the chance to win cash prizes of up to £1,000. The West Devon Challenge started on September 4 when the new edition of the Exeter Yellow Pages directory started delivery to homes and businesses across the north of the borough. The challenge will run until October 20, when the old directories collected by schoolchildren will be recycled into cardboard by Severnside Recycling. Last year, the top honours and a £300 cash prize went to Gulworthy Primary School for collecting 18.3 old directories per pupil. This year, schools will be competing for the chance to win a share of £700 in cash prizes, and all participating schools will automatically be entered into the UK finals, where they could win a top prize of £2,000 cash. Residents are encouraged to give their old 05/06 edition to a participating school. Jane Savage, recycling officer for West Devon Borough Council, said: ?We hope schools will really get the recycling bug and, with the help of the local community, beat last year?s total of 6,363 directories collected.?
