LADY Modiford's School, Walkhampton, has been awarded the highest status — gold — in the national Artsmark scheme.

The school received the award in recognition of its commitment to high quality provision and wide ranging opportunities in all artforms, from music, dance and drama, to art and design, sculpture and media skills, as well as working with arts practitioners and craftworkers.

Headteacher Jim Knight said: 'We are very proud to have achieved this prestigious award. It is a reflection of the commitment of staff and the enthusiasm of children and parents.'

In describing the aspects which make Lady Modiford's an 'Artsmark' school, Jane Johnston, co-ordinator of creative, expressive and performing arts, said: 'Through the arts, all pupils receive an education with breadth and insight. There is a sense of excitement and anticipation in all arts activities.

'Children have confidence as artists and performers and take a pride in sharing their achievements with the whole school community. There is strong involvement by parents, governors and friends of the school, who all value the quality of art provision.'

Ms Johnston said evidence of the arts and lively creativity was to be seen everywhere inside the school building and in the environmental art within the school grounds.

'This award highlights the shared enthusiasm of the whole school community — the energy and talents of the pupils, the dedication and expert skills of the staff — including the team of peripatetic instrumental teachers — and the generous support of the parents — who, through the PTA have purchased both orchestral and multicultural instruments, sponsored arts professionals to come to the school and given time and help for all dance and drama productions,' Ms Johnston said.

The school recently held an arts week, which included Indian dance workshops for each class led by Sharon Kee, school sport co-ordinator from Ivybridge Community College.

In Margaret Morris Movement examinations, credit passes were achieved by Bronte and Gaby Charlton, Amy Tidy, Stephanie Case and Jo-Jo Bradford, and highly commended were Charlotte Ayland, Sophie Anderson, Elizabeth Teague, Amy Neave and Kay Spry.
