Princetown Community Primary School broke from tradition with this year’s nativity and held their performance in a barn, with a real donkey and the school dog, Simba.
The nativity’s strong foundations were laid by Sandra Dodd, layworker for Tavistock Methodist Circuit. Sandra, who is always keen to support the local community, approached Justine and David Colton (owners of Tor Royal Farm) and asked if the school could stage their performance in the barn as it would be an ideal venue.
In her role for the church, Sandra enjoys seeing biblical stories come to life through drama and performance. Justine and David happily agreed as the school have previously utilised their farm for the Harvest Festival in the summer. Local donkey owners Anna and Gary Easton were also happy to provide donkey Moke for the show.
With everything set, the students were able to cram in a few quick practice runs at the barn before the day came around. However, the star of the show (along with the talented cast) proved to be school dog, Simba. Headteacher Emma Byrom who brings Simba to school every day said: ‘Simba is a seven-month-old labrador — he’s been amazing. The children absolutely love him and are always excited to see him. If they are ever upset, he helps to calm them down — he’s great for care and compassion. They help with his responsibilities too. He’s always calm and gentle, he just puts a smile on people’s faces. He’s an asset to our school.’
All staff involved who helped the day go ahead and be successful include: Rebecca Speare, Candace Rickman, Jo Callow, Tristy Hodge and Bev Killingbeck.
