A WEST Devon primary school has won an award from a national charity in recognition of its out-of-school hours provision.

St Andrew's Primary School at Buckland Monachorum will be awarded £400 by the charity Education Extra during Out of School Hours Learning Celebration Week in June.

The school plans to spend the money on producing a school newspaper.

Julie Curtis, deputy headteacher, said: 'We are really excited, the school newspaper idea came from the children and this award will enable us to purchase the software that will allow this dream to become reality.'

She said the school is proud of the range of activities on offer, made possible because of the enthusiasm, support and dedication of pupils, staff and parents.

'The Education Extra Distinction Award is in recognition of our whole out-of-school hours learning activities programme. Every week we offer netball, cross country, country dancing, French, tag rugby, football, ICT, choir, recorders, games, skipping, drama, gymnastics and cycling,' said Ms Curtis.

Baroness Andrews, director of Education Extra, said: 'We have received over 1,000 applications for the Awards this year. This clearly demonstrates the important role out-of-school hours learning plays in extending new opportunities to pupils and raising attainment.

'The schools that won Awards are shining examples of some of the best practice in the field and we are delighted to be able to support their efforts.'
