YOU?VE seen the pictures now its time to get an eyeful of the real thing when three of the stars of the latest ?Farmers? Calendar? get full exposure at Chagford?s late night shopping evening on December 17.
Mr March, Mr May and Mr December aka Paul Warne, Colin Tucker and Jason Thomas, who are all from the Chagford area, will be getting their kit off to boost sales when they sign copies of the calendar in Youd?s Newsagents.
?It?s all in the name of charity,? said Jason Thomas, who is a farm worker at Frenchbeer Farm, on the edge of Chagford. ?But we won?t scare the ladies too much because we will be sitting behind a table.?
Over the past four years the annual Farmers? Calendar, which is on sale in many local farming supply shops and newsagents, has raised in the region of £60,000 for the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution.
It was the brainchild of Totnes farmer Paul Westlake who works with farmer/photographer Nicola de Pulford to produce the hugely popular calendar each year.
A former BBC Countryfile Best Calendar of the Year and Eurotrash Erotic Award winner, Paul?s calendar and the man himself have appeared on lots of TV shows including Channel Four?s Big Breakfast.
?We have different farmers each year and one year we did a male and a female one,? he said. ?Last year it was the turn of the couples but we have reverted to the male only because that seems to be the most popular.?
With each copy of the latest calendar a ?find a model? note has been sent out to widen the scope of models although Paul says he does not have a great deal of trouble finding willing candidates.
?Farmers like to get their clothes off although on the outside they may appear quite shy,? he said. ?I was the first one and I really enjoyed it.?
The 2003 calendar features eight farmers from Devon, three from Somerset and one from Wales.
?We like to vary it a bit and this year we thought we would find a few on Dartmoor who were only too keen to take part,? he added. ?It?s always a good laugh and we make lots of friends doing it.?
Mr Westlake said the difficult bit was when animals were involved: ?One year we were
photographing a farmer with a ram placed in front of him when the ram ran off leaving him completely starkers,? he said. ?The farmer ended up chasing the ram around this walled garden in the nude. It was very funny.?
Often an appearance in the farmers? calendar can lead to other things ? one model got shortlisted for Company Magazine?s Bachelor of the Year Award and romance has blossomed between male and female models.
Mr Westlake said he hoped lots of people would go along to Chagford?s late night shopping evening and meet the lads.
?It?s going to be a good evening and the farmers are really up for it,? he said. ?Maybe we will sign up a few new candidates while we are there.?
Additional calendars are available from Mr Westlake at Murtwell Farm, Diptford, Totnes, Devon TQ9 7NQ ? telephone 01548 821207.
