MARGARET Green Animal Rescue is kicking off 2015 by re-launching its Save a Staffie campaign to raise awareness for this often misunderstood breed.
The Save a Staffie campaign aims to challenge negative perceptions about Staffordshire Bull Terriers while showing people just what lovely family dogs Staffies can make.
Niki and Alan Ging, who manage Wingletang Rescue and Re-homing Centre near Brentor for dogs and cats, said: 'Sadly, the reputation of Staffies has been tarnished in recent years as they have been increasingly bred as status dogs.
'They became the dog of choice for people wanting a fearsome-looking dog because they look stocky and powerful.
'Before this though, they were traditionally known as "the nanny dog" because they are so good in a family environment and adore people.
'We hope that by raising awareness of the wonderful qualities that these dogs possess, we can help re-educate people to think again about adopting one as a pet.'
Often Staffies are overlooked by adopters in favour of other 'more popular' breeds. The charity hopes that by raising awareness of this loyal breed they can change public perceptions and see an increase in families coming forward to adopt.
If you would like to help, there are a number of ways to get involved:
