Bodmin Trophies Duchy division 3
Veryan 4
Mary Tavy 3
MARY Tavy should hide their heads in shame after this predictable defeat at the hands of the Cornish team. On at least five occasions this season they have travelled away and dominated the game only to lose it in the final ten minutes.
At 3-2 up with the slope and wind in their favour and what seemed to be total control of the game they surrendered to two long hopeful punts upfield which saw Veryan?s tall striker outjump, outthink and outmanoeuvre the Tavy backs to claim all three points.
The game started with a dreadful goal given away as a long ball downfield saw the home striker prod past the Tavy keeper. A deliberate handball gave James the chance to square it from the spot and Mary Tavy then took the lead as Stephens turned in Pridham?s cross.
A second penalty was imminent as Dan Brockington was hurled to the ground but the referee waved play on. He did give the home side a spot kick a few minutes later and the leveller came with no mistake as even the Veryan bench pondered on the reason for the decision.
At 2-2 at the halfway mark Tavy looked to be the favourites to walk away the victors and even more so when handed a second penalty as the Veryan keeper pulled down Zorro Philpotts as he rounded him. Amazingly the keeper escaped even a caution before James found the same spot as before with the same outcome to make it 3-2.
Philpotts saw his own rifling effort strike the post and roll agonisingly along the line before being cleared. Stephens and Coole also saw efforts staggeringly kept out and James saw his goalbound header cleared off the line.
