INVESTIGATIONS are being carried out to make a Dartmoor road crossing safer, following a petition by more than 150 residents in the area.

Riders and walkers say crossing the busy A386 at Skitt Corner, near Lydford, is hazardous and have asked the county council to consider steps to lessen the danger.

West Devon?s highways and traffic orders committee at their meeting last week heard that a ?constructive? meeting had been held with county council officers and residents and a variety of measures were being considered, including signing, rumble strips and hedge maintenance.

Cllr Roger Mathew said Skitt Corner was a blind corner and he could well imagine the problems faced by riders when they crossed the road to gain access to the moor.

?The long term solution is a bridge, but I don?t suppose that?s likely to be more than a dream,? he said.

Cllr Christine Marsh thought rumble strips, which would alert drivers and could be heard by riders, were a good idea.

The committee agreed that officers should continue to meet with residents in the area to work towards a solution.
