A SPECIAL meeting is to be requested by Tavistock town councillors, concerned for the safety of pedestrians using the Old Launceston Road area of the town. Members of the town?s finance committee at their meeting last week welcomed the recent decision by West Devon?s highways and traffic orders committee to try to address the conflict between pedestrians and vehicles at the Spring Hill junction by the construction of a mini roundabout. But councillors were concerned that the new residential development at The Manor, off Old Launceston Road, was going to spark other safety issues. Cllr Norma Woodcock said she had been using Old Launceston Road for almost 30 years and in 1967, had presented a petition from residents in the area requesting a footpath down the road ? without success. She said the road would be bound to be used by new residents moving into The Manor and the number of children using this route to school would also increase. ?This needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency,? she said. Cllr Iain Andrews, who also knows the area well, said: ?It?s a very dangerous road and if there is not some traffic calming there, and a footpath, I think there will be a fatality.? Cllr Roy Connelly said it was important the town council liaised with Devon County Council now, before the developers moved in, to make sure members? local knowledge of the area and their concerns were taken on board. The committee has also welcomed the fact that the small area of land at the junction of Spring Hill was due to be refurbished by the council?s works staff ? who were also to build some steps into the steep ground to help pedestrian access.
