TAVISTOCK?s new fire station officer Tony Clark issued safety warnings this week, after the town?s fire crews attended several incidents in the area.

On Friday, two pumps attended a small fire in a house in Whitchurch, which was caused by a curtain touching a lamp. Mr Clark said the damage was minimal but encouraged householders to make sure lights were not covered by curtains, as the bulbs become very hot once turned on.

Mr Clark also warned of the dangers of leaving cooking unattended, after the crews were called to an address in Greenlands on Tuesday evening. He said the resident had fallen asleep, resulting in the small fire.

Mr Clark said: ?This is one of the most common causes of house fires and most common causes of fatality in the home.?

Tavistock?s fire crews have also dealt with a spate of waste bin fires in and around the town during the last week, plus an incident in Mary Tavy when fire was reported in a children?s ?den? on wasteland near Bal Lane.

Mr Clark said luckily, the fire did not spread.
