I WAS very sorry to hear of the demise of Meldon Quarry. The word 'mothballed' was quoted in the Times (May 26), which I think means nothing in the long run.

I have a continual connection with the quarry — my father from 1931 to 1960, my brother-in-law in the 1950s, my son-in-law from 1979 to the present and my grand-daughter for a time.

I can remember at least 12 men from the Bridestowe area cycling there to work. In the 1950s there was a workforce of 250.

I feel that May 31 2011 must have been a very sad day for all connected with Meldon Quarry.
