A RECORD number of competitors took part in this year?s Ruby Run between Hatherleigh and Holsworthy. A total of 200 runners and almost 100 walkers attempted the 13.3 mile half marathon, which this year raised money for the Devon Air Ambulance and Muscular Dystrophy, as well as for two local charities ? one in Holsworthy and the other in Hatherleigh. This was the fifth time that the event had taken place ? it was first set up by Dennis Bater, during his term as the Mayor of Hatherleigh. The route of the event alternates, setting off one year from Hatherleigh and the next from Holsworthy. Mr Bater said: ?A lot of the runners this year said they?d be back again next year ? even though they were sweaty and tired at the time.? He added that the event would not have been possible without the many volunteers who helped to set up watering stations for the runners.
