ST ANDREW'S School in Buckland Monachorum has been named as one of the most animal-friendly schools in the country for 2002 by the RSPCA.
The school is one of ten in England and Wales to be awarded £500 after demonstrating a sustained and outstanding commitment to animal welfare. In recognition of its achievement, the school has been presented with a cheque and special shield.
Over the last six years a wildlife area in the school grounds has been developed, including creating ponds and marshy areas. A bird table, bird boxes and a natural badger path all feature.
Two extra-curricular environmental clubs meet weekly to discuss ways of protecting wildlife among other issues, and the school has raised money for wildlife projects around the world and to sponsor individual animals.
Environmental co-ordinator for the school, Ros Knight, said they were 'absolutely thrilled' to receive the award. 'It's nice to have the work we have done recognised by a different source — we are already an Eco-school,' she said.
'The children have worked so hard, it is brilliant.'
RSPCA regional education advisor Christine Poulsom said the award showed the school's commitment to animal welfare education and was evidence of the partnership the RSPCA had developed with schools all over the country.
'Winning this award is a fantastic achievement and the pupils, teachers, parents and everyone involved with the school should be proud,' Ms Poulsom said.
The RSPCA give talks and run activity sessions on a range of topics, including pet care, farming, wildlife and pollution.
School visits to education centres, wildlife hospitals and rehoming centres are also organised for pupils and more information is available on the website http://www.rspca.org.uk">www.rspca.org.uk. Or contact Christine Poulsom on 01823 480110, who can also arrange a school visit.
