HATHERLEIGH and District Rotary Club?s president-elect recently visited a Rape Crisis Clinic near Cape Town and handed over a financial grant from the club. The clinic, in the township of Khayelitsha, provides a one-stop place for rape survivors to be seen by a councillor, have a statement taken, have DNA samples taken, see a doctor and police. This is unusual in South Africa, where rape has reached epidemic proportions and few rapists are successfully convicted. Not only does the fast and seamless process result in the survivors being less traumatised, but perpetrators are often being taken into custody within a matter of hours, frequently still at the scene of the crime. The success is based on a fully trained professional team knowing what is required for prosecution, and successful convictions have increased to an unprecedented 80%. Khayelitsha is the fastest growing city in Africa with a population of over a million, including thousands of refugees from Zimbabwe. The visit was part of a twinning process between the two Rotary Clubs in African and Devon.
