HATHERLEIGH town crier Rosalind Charlton Chard brought the call of success to South Devon at the weekend with another performance at a competition for top town criers.

Ros began by taking the best dressed prize last Thursday, in a preparation event at Sharpitor for the two-day competition that followed in Kingsbridge.

The main event involved two cries each day with scores being combined together to work out the overall winner.

On Friday, Ros came second overall. On Saturday, she finished second in the Commonwealth and second in the International competition, and won the best dressed category.

Among the prizes, Ros? powerful vocal chords helped to secure at the Kingsbridge event was a little chiming bell.

Around a dozen town criers headed to Kingsbridge to take part in the event. And there was no respite for weary voices on Sunday, as another competition was held for the assembled criers at the village of Chilllington between Kingsbridge and Dartmouth.

Ros was again placed second, in the Armada Cup, but she did win the Sam Lake Trophy, for best crier in Devon.

One of only a handful of female town criers in the country, Ros has helped put Hatherleigh on the map with her success in competitions.

Ros, was accompanied as ever by her faithful dog ?Millie the Magnificent?.

Ros said she desperately needed more sponsorship to be able to continue to travel to major competitions.

She said if she could secure more sponsorship she hoped to be able to promote Hatherleigh abroad by representing the town at the European Town Criers? Championships in Belgium, which take place next year.

She would also love to participate in the World Town Criers? Championships taking place in Australia in 2005.
