A CHRISTMAS appeal for funds is being made by Tavistock and District Homelessness Trust — the charity which helps people living in desperate circumstances in the area.
Treasurer Brian Eales said: 'Last year's appeal brought a good response and we were able to help several families and individuals in crowded conditions to make a fresh start in a home of their own.'
The charity makes loans to people who have found accommodation, allowing deposits and rent advances to be paid. The interest-free loans are then repaid from benefits.
'It can be a big problem for people on low incomes or on benefit to find the amount of money private landlords expect in advance,' said Mr Eales.
The trust is funded by local churches, public donations and fundraising activities.
Clinics are held in Kingdon House on Wednesday mornings between 10am and noon, when a trustee is available to help explain the system, and on Monday and Thursday mornings at the Housing Aid West Devon office in Kingdon House.
'We are grateful to all the local organisations, churches and individuals who have supported the trust's work by generous donations during the past year,' said spokesman Chris Haygarth.
'This Christmas we are particularly grateful to the Lions Club and the Stannary Band for sponsoring the trust as well as Children's Hospice South West at their concert on December 18.
'Not only will this boost our funds but we are also hoping that it will raise public awareness of the work the trust does.'
l Anyone wanting to help boost the trust's funds can send donations to Tavistock and District Homelessness Trust, c/o Brian Eales, Kingdon House, Pym Street, Tavistock.
