ROGER Bawden, a member of Tavistock Sir Francis Drake Bowling Club was elected as the county's president for the year at the recent meeting of the Devon County Bowling Association.
The president's charity for the year 2001 — The Children's Hospice South West — realised £2,780.
Mr Bawden was born at Lifton Down and moved to Tavistock with his family in 1937. His father, Reg Bawden, was a famous bowler representing his county as a Middleton Cup skip for many years and was also an international trialist on three occasions.
A chartered secretary and a chartered banker, Roger joined the Tavistock Bowling Club together with his wife, Henny, soon after returning to Tavistock on retirement. Like his father and his grandfather, Edward, before him he held the position of club captain. He also served as the club's vice-chairman and secretary.
He has one son, Jeremy, married to Moira, and three grandchildren, Bruce, Simon and Charlotte, who are living in Mary Tavy. A keen singer, he is a member of the Loveny Male Voice Choir and of Tavistock Probus Club.
