HURDWICK Golf Club held its annual putting competiton recently to raise funds for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. The event, which was held in conjunction with a medal competition, took place in wet and windy weather but this could not dampen the spirits of the golfers who took part. In division one the winner on countback was Roger Backaller with a net 70. In second place, also with 70 was Steve Howells and Kevin Pugh was third with 71. The division two winner was Derek Nicholls with a net 70, also on countback, followed by Oliver Richards, 70, and Paul Mace, 76. The leading lady was Pam Atkins with a net 77. The only two of the day went to Kevin Puch who won the 'twos' sweep. The putter winner, again on countback, was Roger Backaller. Both he and club captain Phil Bryant finished with 25 putts. In the midweek Stableford, the first three in division one were Kevin Pugh, 34 points, Steve Howells, 32 and Chris Dicker, 31. In division two the best result of a weather affected day was returned by John Burrough with 36, followed by Ray Hurle, 26, and Cyril Lyon, 24. Local golfers are reminded that Hurdwick holds its mixed open Greensomes on Sunday, April 15; entry is £25 per pair, to include a light lunch. Entry enquiries to Ray Hurle on 01822 612746.
