A NUMBER of competitions have taken place at Hurdwick Golf Club over recent weeks, the major one being the annual Hurdwick Hundred, a 36 hole medal played over two weekend days. Saturday resulted in a tight finish in division one and Roger Downing just pipped Steve Howells on countback, both returning net 69s. Martin Stevens was in third place with 70. Division two was won by Tom Backaller with a net 69 and Sam Martin took second place on countback from Tony Pearson, both with a net 70. The winning lady was Sally Arscott with an excellent net 66, followed by Rosemay Rea with 69 and Gill Williams with 73. On the Sunday, the division one winner was Phil Bryant with 68 and Neil Tamblin took second place from Tony Pearson, both with 69. The best result of the weekend came from Tom Backaller, who again won division two with an exceptional net 64. John Rea took second place from Paul Mace, both with 69. Yvette Wood won the ladies? competition from Sally Arscott, both with 68, and Audrey Pugh was in third place with 75. The only ?Two? of the weekend came from Paul Bryant to win the sweep. The overall winner was no surprise with Tom Backaller winning the Crystal Decanter. In second place overall was Steve Howell with Phil Bryant taking third place. The leading lady was Sally Arscott who won the Crystal Vase. She was followed by Yvette Wood and Audrey Pugh. The weekend finished with a barbecue. Earlier in the month the midweek stableford included competition for the Hurdwickian Trophy, which was presented by past captain Gerry Boyce for the best result from a player aged over 65. Division one was won by Roger Downing with 43 points, Ernie Trimble was second with 40 and Peter Brookbank third with 38. In division two, the winner was Ray Hurle with 39 points, which also won the Hurdwickian Trophy. In second place was Tony Wood with 38, followed by Paul Mace with 37. Roger Downing and Rodney Browne won the ?Two?s? sweep. Also in July was the Waverley TBS medal. The winner of division one and the tankard was Steve Howells with an excellent net 66. He was followed by Tony Pearson and Roger Downing, both with 70. Sam Martyn won division two with 69, second Tony Wood 72 and third Andy Furse 72. Sally Arscott shot a net 72 to win the ladies? tankard. Congratulations also go to Phil Bryant and Val Raine who won the annual mixed event and a reminder to all in Tavistock who knew Tim Reeder, that the club will be holding its Motor Neurone charity event on October 15.
