Okehampton Cup
Okehampton Argyle 3rds 4
Newtown FC 0
OKEHAMPTON were obviously annoyed by their first league defeat on Saturday because they played this game with passion. They battled for every ball and created outstanding football.
In the absence of Ian Wilson, David Grimes took the sweeper role and enforced his authority on the defence leaving Newtown taking wishful chances from outside the Okehampton goal area. There were occasions where Newtown could have scored but keeper Neil Clift showed his true class, denying their few good opportunities.
In front of Newtown's goal, player-manager Chris Drew led by example with two great goals, one a well placed header into the top corner. James Callaghan scored a brilliant solo goal, turning three players before slotting the ball into the net, and the inspirational Robbie Sandercock, who was man of the match, created many chances and scored after being set up by Jerome Whatley.
An impressive performance by Okehampton who dominated against a team four leagues above them, proving their quality and why they are top of their league.
