TAVISTOCK BMX rider Andy Maddock, officially the UK number one for 2001, put in a very creditable performance at the world championships in Louisville, Kentucky earlier this month.
Andy, who had to miss most of last year's season through injury, found qualification hard for the championships, but was successful in working hard to raise the money to attend.
After a couple of bad days where all practice was cancelled and the start hill had to be rebuilt, riders were given only 40 minutes to practise before racing started.
Competing in the Cruiser class, Andy raced well and came a creditable 5th in his heats, narrowly missing a place in the next round. Having enjoyed the experience, Andy is now looking forward to next year's world championships in Germany.
Returning home, there was little time before the British championships in Burnham-on-Sea over the bank holiday weekend — where there was an extremely large entry in the 17+ class due to the good weather.
After coming second in the quarter finals and third in the semi-finals, Andy was an excellent 4th in a nail-biting final.
In his 17-29 Cruiser class he qualified through the heats into a final where he came second — just missing out on winning.
Andy also finished third overall in the club championships.
Next on the calendar is the final national competition of the season, where Andy will collect his trophy and plate for being the UK number one for this year.
