A REQUEST for a new shop sign in Duke Street has sparked a review of signage for the pannier market area in Tavistock. Tavistock Town Council?s properties committee was last week asked to consider grant- ing permission for a sign advertising Bizkit Clothing, to be erected above one of the archways into the pannier market. Mark Dyson, one of the partners of Bizkit, told members that passing trade around the newly developed East End Stores was ?minimal? at the best of times ? it was hoped a sign in Duke Street directing shoppers to the East End area would spark a ?vital increase? in trade, not just for Bizkit, but the other businesses at that end of the market. Cllr Mandy Govier said the council had disposed of ?A-frame? advertising due to health and safety reasons ? she felt a vertical hanging sign advertising all the shops together might be the way forward. Cllr Betty Batchelor said the appearance of the rear of some shops at the eastern end of the pannier market precinct looked ?awful? and did not encourage shoppers to venture towards the area. She thought the council should approach the businesses leasing these particular properties . ?I just wonder if we could ask them if we could enhance the back area,? she said. Cllr Peter Jones, chairman of the finance committee, felt the pannier market itself was not very well signposted. ?We probably need a total review of what we do to advertise the pannier market and the East End shops, rather than going off half-cocked,? he said. Town clerk Roger Howard said the proprietors of Duke Street businesses backing onto the pannier market had recently carried out works which had considerably improved the appearance of their premises. ?What we have tried to do when the weather was better was to put some traders along the colonnaded area ? we?ve had the flower seller there for example ? we will try and do the same when the weather improves,? he said. Col Howard said the council was also considering the idea of Victorian-style ?barrows? being placed in this area, which could be hired by traders. Councillors recommended a review of signage should be undertaken by the pannier market sub committee. Col Howard should also write to Mr Dyson, of Bizkit, informing him that advertising policy was currently under review.
