TAVISTOCK Squash Club avenged their earlier defeat in a top of the table clash with league leaders Torquay. The home side scored 17 points in a 3-2 victory which put them back on track after last week's disappointing 5-0 defeat against South Dartmoor.
Colin Grice got Tavistock off to a good start going 2-1 up in his number 2 string match but this was short-lived as his opponent fought back to level the scores. In a tense last game Colin could not quite find the winning shots and his opponent took the last game 9-6.
On the other court Bob Cowen levelled the match by winning 3-1. He lost the first game which was relatively close, but motored through the next three dropping only five points in total. Bob's unorthodox style proved difficult for his opponent.
Stuart Cox, at number 4, started well in his match and took the first game 10-8. However, his tactics seemed to change somewhat thereafter and instead of continuing at a fast pace he slowed the game down to his opponent's advantage. Stuart lost the next three games which put Torquay back in the driving seat.
However, Tavistock's Tim Wallis, playing up at number three, levelled the match by winning 3-0. His opponent was awkward in style and his long reach and power troubled Tim in the first game. Tim soon got to grips and some good volleys and drop shots saw him take the next three.
With the scores level at 2-2, it was down to Steve Tripp to give Tavistock victory. He kept his opponent under pressure in the first two games. In the third, his opponent started well and Steve made some uncharacteristic errors and found himself five points down. Showing good composure he clawed his way back to take the match 3-0.
