Tavistock Colts 33

Wadebridge Colts 5

TAVISTOCK avenged defeat on the first Saturday of the season with this excellent victory at Sandy Park on Saturday.

Tavistock took the game to Wadebridge with some sparkling handling from fly-half Will Frapell and centre Thomas Jefferson, who orchestrated excellent moves by the threequarter line. The forwards put in some hard work to win excellent ball.

From this early glut of possession winger Rob Williams was released deep in his own half on a long run to the Wadebridge try line. He still had some work to do but outstripped the defence to score. Josh Sutton converted with an excellent kick from wide out.

Next to score was fly-half Frapell who ghosted through the Wadebridge defence for a score close to the posts. A third try was notched by centre James Radford who forced his way over the Wadebridge line. Sutton converted both tries.

The fourth Tavistock try fell deservedly to the forwards who had kept a stranglehold on Wadebridge throughout the half. Both the Tavistock flankers worked hard. Ollie Dick was everywhere, putting in some excellent tackles and obtaining turnover ball, while Paul Dunstan was equally effective in the loose acting as a link between forwards and backs. It was, therefore, appropriate that back-row colleague Hamish Pearse-Danker got the try.

The second half was more even, with Tavistock relaxing and allowing Wadebridge to exert pressure. This was stemmed by determined defensive tackling by forwards Phil Maloney and Matt Smith in particular.

The Tavistock front row of Ben Sutton, Darren Sutton and Matt Martin had to work hard in the scrummage against bigger opponents, who tried to intimidate and were able to secure their own ball which allowed the defensive lines to be cleared.

But halfway through the half the Tavistock defensive concentration was broken and Wadebridge were allowed to run in a try from long distance after they had been awarded a penalty.

Tavistock had the last word when, after securing ball inside their own 22 line, Thomas Jefferson ran more than 70 metres to score. Sutton converted with the last kick of the game.
