A SPECIAL retirement presentation was held at Milton Coombe Church last Sunday for a woman who has been the church?s dedicated organist for 70 years. Minnie Grainger, 87, was still in her teens when she became the organist for the church in 1937, and now in 2007 she still attends every Sunday and plays the organ, even though she sufferers with arthritis. Her musical gift to the church began when she was 11 ? she played the harmonium for the Sunday School. Since then, countless social evenings in the village have seen her on the piano. Apart from her work as a typist for the National Fire Service, her cottage, where she was born in 1920, and its garden, music is her chief interest. Throughout the war she formed part of a local jazz group and even today can swing a commendable rhythm on the piano. Minnie Grainger received many gifts from the church members in appreciation of her achievement for the parish, including a special engraved vase, and a personal letter from South West Devon MP Gary Streeter.
