THE 'Reflections' column published on March 25 was written by John Withers. I believe what he wrote was important. However, tucked away on page 42 of your busy paper the message might by now have sunk out of sight for many, including, I dare say, for Mr Blair and Mr Bush. But I want to share what John Withers had to say.
How we respond now to global threats of violence, John Withers wrote, 'will have a profound effect on how future generations live their lives'. He suggests ways we can respond which will take us away from the doom-laden sterility of present policy where violence and threats of violence are met by a blanket declaration of war, both sides declaring, 'If you do not believe what we believe we will hurt and damage you'. That is a pretty hopeless stance to adopt. It will certainly not lead to peace.
John Withers' suggested responses to a violent world, if acted upon, certainly hold the possibility of a brighter future for future generations than do the words and actions of present leaders.
