A WOMAN from West Devon has won a hamper, full of kitchenware goodies, after taking part in a competition aimed at getting more people to freeze food rather than throw it away.
Anita Pearce from Monkokehampton entered a quiz organised by West Devon Borough Council, as part of its 'Love Food Hate Waste' campaign.
The campaign urges people to 'get friendly with your freezer' and highlights the benefits of cutting down on food waste – which costs the average family £50 a month!
Mrs Pearce won a hamper of items for storing and measuring food along with a book about making the most of leftovers.
She said: 'It's a lovely prize, really worth having. I already try to avoid wasting food and the hamper is going to make that easier in future.'
Cllr Robert Sampson, the borough council's lead member for waste minimisation, said: 'I'm delighted so many people entered our quiz and took part in the Love Food Hate Waste campaign. It's amazing to think that if everyone stopped wasting food it would be as good for the planet as taking one in five cars off the road, and so much money can be saved by putting leftovers in the freezer rather than throwing them away.'
More than 500 people entered the quiz and during the campaign, which ran throughout the summer and early autumn, more than 1,200 householders were involved.
