HATHERLEIGH residents hope to raise £2,000 to enable them to send a whole farmyard to help poor families in Africa build a poverty-free future. Send a Cow, the Christian organisation and registered charity which gives practical help to poor farmers in Africa, has been chosen as Hatherleigh Benefice Churches Lent charity. The charity provides not just livestock, but also training in animal care, sustainable livestock and low cost veterinary care. Send a Cow works with some of the poorest families in Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Ethiopia and Lesotho. For £2,000, the charity can provide a whole farmyard containing one cross-bred cow, two pairs of goats, three pigs, four flocks of poultry, five hives of bees, 600 fruit tree saplings and seven days of training. Whatever money the community is able to make will help desperately poor farmers to be able to support themselves. Anyone who is a UK taxpayer can ask for their donation to be treated as Gift Aid, saving an extra 28p per pound. On Tuesday, March 22, at the Old Schools, Hatherleigh, there will be a coffee morning, followed by lunches of soup and a roll, to help boost the appeal.
