DARTMOOR Rescue Group and police helicopter were called out on Monday night to search for a 54-year-old German tourist who was overdue on a walk across the moors.

Bud Francis from the Tavistock section of the group said both they and the Okehampton section were called out at 11.30pm after the tourist had failed to return from a walk from the Postbridge area known as the Northern Wilderness.

He had set off at 11am and had been due back at 6pm.

Although the man had visited the area before and was familiar with it, the rescue teams were alerted in view of the difficult terrain.

The area of moor involved was wide, but the police helicopter, which had also been deployed, spotted the man at Broad Down when returning to the Postbridge area.

Initially, the helicopter was unable to land, and the nearest rescue group team was redirected to the grid reference.

However, the helicopter subsequently successfully landed and took the uninjured man safely back to Postbridge.
