WELL, how nice to know that someone is so concerned for our well-being they propose to close the ring road, on the moor above Okehampton, to all private vehicles. The reason? The road has deteriorated to the extent that it 'poses a significant threat to public safety'.
A few years ago it was announced that the road would be allowed to fall into a state of natural disrepair — benign neglect — to deter public use with a vehicle.
However, the state of natural neglect and disrepair seems to have been rather selective, In a very short time after this decision was announced, just a few stretches of the road, in length of about 30 yards, started to deteriorate rather badly.
There are many people who have always enjoyed going to the inner regions of Dartmoor and are no longer able to make the journey on foot, but would still like to go there.
Why not do a u-turn? Repair the road and allow access to all — without the risk — after all those who are able can still walk if they wish.
