THE 'We Will Remember Banner' visited Kelly House near Lifton this month.

The banner has been travelling around the county to remember those who fought and died in the the First World War.

Visitors to the house were able to add a poppy in memory of a loved one and could contribute memories of their relatives who fought in the war.

At Kelly, the family remembered Lieutenant Robert Maitland Kelly, who was Sophia Kelly's great great uncle.

Sofia said: 'He was in Ceylon when war broke out. He immediately returned to England in December 1914 and joined the Devon Yeomanry, which soon became The Royal North Devon Hussars.

'Robert fought on the front line with 5th Battalion The Dorset Regt, and was killed in action near Beaumont Hamel on January 11, 1917.

'His body was never recovered. He is remembered on the memorial to the missing at Thiepval.'

The stories the public contribute will be given to the Devon archives at the end of the project.
