YOU report (March 25) that a patriotic touch was introduced to the Mayor's civic dinner at Okehampton with the singing of the first verse of the National Anthem prior to the loyal toast.

With this country's independence and freedom being surreptitiously eroded by quislings and fifth columnists within government and all political parties, is it not time that we showed our patriotism a bit more by singing the second verse of the anthem?

Last year, Australian TV reported on a group of nonagenarian Australian World War One veterans who, after visiting the war graves of their fallen comrades in France, came to Britain. They were forced to wait in the queue for aliens whilst they watched Germans and Italians walk through unchecked. As if this insult was not enough, it was decided to strip search them. Is it any wonder that a centenarian amongst them said he became an instant republican?

At the various elections in May, let us remember who our true friends are and where our loyalties should be. Remember the second verse and sing it loud, clear and often:

'O Lord our God arise,

Scatter her enemies

And make them fall;

Confound their politics,

Frustrate their knavish tricks,

On Thee our hopes we fix,

God save us all.'

Amen to that.
