A LONG-awaited project to replace the loos in Fairplace Gardens and re-landscape the area begins next week.

A contractor has been found to carry out the work after fears that delays would jeopardise up to £30,000 of European funding for the scheme.

The existing toilets, which were closed at the end of last year after the latest vandalism attack, will be demolished next week in preparation for the new build.

Contract services manager for West Devon Borough Council Jill Skelton said she expected the work to be completed in September.

'There is going to be some disruption through the summer which is the last thing we would have chosen but the scheme has been put back and back because of the objections we received.'

Planning permission was given seven months ago but residents of neighbouring Peel House were not happy over the close proximity of the toilets to their property.

The borough council has since entered a Party Wall Agreement with the residents which controls how the building is erected.

The £100,000 scheme was originally supposed to be completed by the end of June to qualify for European cash but Mrs Skelton said if the council got its skates on the money could still be safe.

'If we start now we feel we can get enough of the project done to comply with the rules of getting this European funding,' she said. 'I think the townspeople will be pleased that we can finally get on with this work and have some new public toilets in the town.'

The council's decision to build the new toilet block closer to Peel House and do away with the alleyway at the back was to deter vandalism and anti-social behaviour.
