SINCE they took over the Stores in South Zeal, Chris and Helen Law have worked extremely hard to provide a service to the community and a living for themselves and their children.

They have enlarged the store and stocked it with quality food, opened a tea-room and provided space for a community computer.

The store has been open from 7.30am to 7pm. As a Parkinson's Disease sufferer I have days when I do not feel able to go as far as Okehampton and it is good to know that essential supplies are available right on my doorstep.

Imagine, therefore, my surprise and dismay to find that the shop opening hours have been cut right back. This, because Chris and Helen are considering their position due to their planning application to improve the store having been turned down by the DNPA.

Shame on them; they approve of building houses on a greenfield site at Moretonhampstead and yet turn down a modest proposal to improve life for an existing community.

Yet another case of planning madness, I fear.
