A WEST Devon bakery has been named runner-up in a national competition, after getting the thumbs up from customers.
Red Dog Bakery in Black Torrington was runner-up in the nationwide search to find Britain's best local shop — part of a competition organised by lettings agency cottages4u. The company called on holidaymakers and locals to nominate their favourite independent businesses to appear in its 'Go Local' guide.
Red Dog Bakery came second in the category for best local shop, thanks to its use of traditional baking methods, friendly staff, service to the community and the exceptional quality of its products. During the shortlisting, the bakery was visited by a mystery shopper who marked it against a series of tough criteria.
Roger Birt, owner of Red Dog Bakery, said he was delighted at the shop's success. 'We are still in our first year in business so this recognition is very important to us.'
Mr Birt said he was determined to continue to improve service and products at Red Dog and thanked all those who nominated the bakery for the award.
Bill Gibb, one of the competition judges, said: 'It took a lot of time and consideration to pick between the contenders in this category — there were some truly outstanding candidates. If you want to know what bread should really taste like, make this bakery a must-visit.'
