Cornwall Senior Cup 2nd round

Callington Town 2

Torpoint Athletic 1

AN injury hit Callington battled well for this victory but the result was overshadowed by four sending offs and some unsightly scenes after the final whistle.

Town made the first breakthrough on 28 minutes. Paul Webber ran onto a good through ball from midfield and calmly chipped Scott Kippax in the Torpoint goal for the opener.

Within 90 seconds of the restart, Callington had the opportunity to go further ahead and Torpoint were reduced to 10 men. Webber beat the Athletic defence rounded Kippax and launched the ball goalwards only to be denied by the hand of defender Roger Collins, the referee awarded a penalty which was taken by Webber but well saved by Kippax.

Torpoint enjoyed early possession in the second half but soon Callington were on top and pressing the defence. Webber missed a couple of chances before new boy Freddie Bennetton opened his Callington scoring after 65 minutes. Gary Smith was the provider and Bennetton finished off with finesse shooting low past Kippax.

But Town inexplicably took their foot off the gas and Torpoint came back on 70 minutes, teenage star Mike Roberts placed the ball brilliantly past Andy Brenton in the Callington goal to half the arrears.

With seven minutes to go, Callington's main advantage disappeared with the second red card. Mark Damerell was clean through and was hauled back by Town defender Steve Shaw and again the official was left with no alternative other than to dismiss the player.

In the final minutes, the game descended into farce with two further dismissals. On 85 minutes, Torpoint's Wayne Crow was red carded for a crude tackle and then on the stroke of full time, his colleague Darren Northcott followed him for another off the ball incident.

At the final whistle, the referee and his colleagues were surrounded by Torpoint players, officials and supporters and it was Callington's players and managers that diffused the situation by dragging Torpoint players away.

The referee confirmed afterwards that he was reporting the club following the incidents.
