WITH reference to your article in last week?s Times, we should be doing everything to encourage recycling within the home, and the appointment of an officer to promote this by West Devon Borough Council is a step in the right direction, as long as it is covered by an existing budget. I believe, however, that weekly collections should continue, to prevent large amounts of material being stored, a definite disincentive, and to avoid the introduction of wheelie bins, which are very unsightly as they are so large and cannot be hidden away, and also difficult to manoeuvre for some. I find the existing service excellent, complemented now by the garden waste collection which I hope will expand to save a trip or two to the recycling centre as two bags cannot cope with the output of even a small garden such as ours. I hope the council also encourages more home composting for all vegetable matter, perhaps with free or heavily subsidised containers of different sizes so that all sizes of households with gardens are catered for. It?s amazing how this material gets broken down, especially with a legion of tiger worms at work, it is not smelly, and the end product can then be used to fertilise the garden. A last question: it seems that the recycling centre in Crowndale Road, Tavistock, is well used and I expect a very large percentage of users have ?green? motives. Why is it then that so many leave their car engines running when they unload? Keith Bowles 12 St David?s Road, Tavistock
