HOW pleasing it was to see your front page headline of May 25, ?A real buzz at the market?. Reading the article, it seems incongruous that a small village like Exbourne, along with Jacobstowe, has been so proactive and has the initiative to start a market like this, when one considers the decision of Okehampton Town Council to close the Market Hall in Okehampton and allow an outisde businessman to create a cinema. Okehampton has a long and cherished history as a market town with the market dating back to 1494 in the mayoralty of Wal Holditch and permitted by Robert Courtenay when Henry VIII was on the throne. Speaking to councillors, it would appear that perhaps there is not the commitment to the cinema project as it would appear? I see from the Okehampton Times that the proposed date is now August, so it is not too late to discuss this matter in a full debate. Please reconsider your actions, which are at variance with the wishes of the Okehampton public. Please do not destroy Okehampton?s heritage as a market town forever. Meanwhile, congratulations to Exbourne and Jacobstowe. Mike Wreford Crediton Road Okehampton
