TWO Tavistock runners are busy preparing for the forthcoming New York Millennium marathon and are aiming to give disabled children the same opportunities.
Richard Fuller, 18, and Jeremy Westmoor, 26, will speed off the start line in November in support of 'Get Kids Going', a children's charity which specialises in giving disabled youngsters the right equipment to get them mobile and for some of them the opportunity to take part in sport.
Richard is a keen swimmer, training under Archie Brew at Kelly College in an attempt to make the England team and the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester.
He also has the nationals up-coming at Sheffield, where Olympic team members will be chosen for Sydney.
Richard runs to augment his training and has already competed in the Bristol half-marathon and the Dublin marathon, both in 1998.
Jeremy is an accomplished runner and comes to the challenge fresh from the recent London Marathon and last weekend's Plymouth half marathon.
As well as their busy training schedules, the two are hard at work raising funds for their chosen charity.
There are collecting tins all over Tavistock, in shops, pubs and the town's swimming pool. They aim to raise £3,000 before the November 5 race, sufficient to buy a new electric wheelchair or one-and-a-half sports chairs.
